In this day and age, it often seems as if you can choose to alter any of the features you were born with. Don’t like your cheekbones? Contour them to your heart’s content. Unhappy with the size of your lips? Break out the lip liner. The truth is, you aren’t even stuck with your natural eye shape. If you wish your eyes looked a little different, you can always turn to the power of makeup for help. No scary or invasive fixes necessary—just eye makeup. If you have eyes that are far apart—also known as wide set—you may find this article of particular interest. We’re sharing a makeup look that helps to visually minimize the space between your eyes. (Pretty neat, right?) But first, we’re going over how to be positive whether or not you have wide set eyes.
How to Determine if You Have Wide Set Eyes
If you can’t say for sure what eye shape you have, we don’t blame you. Just like figuring out your face shape, it isn’t always easy. Thankfully, there’s an oh-so-simple trick for determining once and for all if you have wide set eyes. Grab a measuring tape or ruler, and take note of how much distance there is between your eyes. Once you’ve jotted down that number, measure the width of one of your eyes. If the second number is smaller than the first, it’s safe to say you have wide set eyes. The good news is, now that you know, you can focus on applying makeup to suit your particular eye shape.
How to Wear Makeup When You Have Wide Set Eyes
Everything from your skin tone to your hair color can impact how you should do your makeup, and that includes the amount of space between your eyes. If you have wide set eyes, follow these simple steps to minimize the distance between them.
Step #1: Prime your eyes. It doesn’t matter what your eyes look like, eye primer doesn’t discriminate. If you’re going to be putting extra effort into your eye makeup, changing your look to suit your wide set eyes, you’ll want it to last! Go ahead and smooth on a (thin) layer of primer before doing anything else.
Step #2: Start with a dark eye shadow. The good news is, applying eye shadow to wide set eyes isn’t any more challenging that what you’re used to. You just reverse what you would typically do. Rather than applying a light, shimmery shade to the inner half of your eyelids, go dark. Press a dark eye shadow, like the L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Monos Eyeshadow in Noir Cest Noir, into your lid, focusing the eye shadow toward the inner corner of your eyes.
Step #3: Highlight the outer corner. You may be used to highlighting around your tear duct, but not anymore! That little trick helps to open up the eyes and can make them seem even further apart. Don’t worry, you can still use highlighter, it just has to go somewhere else. Apply the L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Lumi Shimmerista Highlighting Powder to the outer corner of your eyes instead of the inner corner. Once you’re done, don’t move on just yet. Be sure to blend the highlighter into the darker eye shadow first.
Step #4: Line the inner half of your eyes. Lining all the way around your eyes can be quite the dramatic look and it isn’t for everyone—wide set eyes included. That’s why it’s become a major makeup trend to only line half of your eyes. Chances are you’ve seen people wearing (or tried it for yourself) eyeliner on the outer halves of their eyes for more subtle definition, but wide set eyes are actually better suited to lining the inner halves. Use the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof Pencil Eyeliner to define the inner halves of your eyes along the top and bottom lash lines.
Step #5: Apply mascara. Mascara may not be able to adjust the distance between your eyes, but it’s still a must. Apply a coat or two of the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara to give your lashes a boost of volume and length—just what everyone wants.
Step #6: Extend brows inwards. If you’ve been over plucking your eyebrows or forgetting to fill them in, it’s time for a change. By drawing your eyebrows closer together, you can visually eliminate distance between the eyes. That means stop plucking in between your brows and start filling them in at the front. Try the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Kabuki Blender for a soft yet full look.
